The holiday season has a way of arriving before we’re ready.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re hosting the family you love or the family that challenges you. Whether your table is full or you’re navigating this season after a loss — sitting with what that now means and what it looks like without someone who used to be there. No matter what you celebrate, no matter your tradition, the holidays carry their own particular weight. And for many of us, that weight quietly accumulates long before the first gathering arrives.
This is what we’re talking about on November 19th at 1440 Health Collective. Not stress as a character flaw. Not the holidays as something to simply survive. But the honest, grounded conversation about what’s actually happening in your body and what you can do about it.
Your Nervous System Was Not Built for This
Here’s something worth sitting with: our physiology was not designed for the modern world.
The same nervous system that once protected us from physical danger — the one that floods us with cortisol and adrenaline, that narrows our focus and tightens our chest — is now
- responding to overflowing inboxes
- family group chats
- end-of-year deadlines
- social obligations
- and the particular grief that surfaces when a season is supposed to feel a certain way and doesn’t.
The body doesn’t distinguish between a predator and a difficult in-law. It responds to perceived threat the same way it always has. And when that response is activated repeatedly, without sufficient recovery, the system starts to show the strain.
This isn’t a personal failing. It’s biology meeting a world it wasn’t built for.
You Already Know How to Regulate — You Just Don’t Know That You Know
Think about the last time things felt like too much. When the input got too loud, too fast, too heavy. What did you do?
Maybe you slipped away to a quiet room for a few minutes. Maybe you went for a run, or took a long shower, or counted something — steps, breaths, ceiling tiles. Maybe you put on a certain song, or stepped outside, or found yourself staring out a window without quite knowing why.
Whatever it was — that was regulation. Your inner system, doing what it knows how to do: finding a way to make room.
There is no wrong version of this. All of it is pointing to the same thing — the moment your system signals that it needs a break, a reset, a chance to pour something out before it overflows.
Stress Isn’t the Enemy. Chronic Stress Is.
This is worth saying clearly: stress is not bad. It’s a normal, necessary part of being alive. The body is designed to move through it… to rise, respond, and return to equilibrium.
The problem is the constant stress that never fully resolves. The glass that keeps filling without ever being poured out.
Think of your nervous system as a glass of water. It can hold a great deal — but it has a capacity. When it’s filled past that point, it overflows. And if we never create the conditions for it to empty a little, it will keep overflowing — until the body finds its own way to make that happen, which rarely feels like a choice.
The good news is that the nervous system is remarkably plastic. Flexible. Capable of learning new patterns when given the conditions and the consistency to do so. Change takes time and it isn’t linear… but it is possible. And it doesn’t require a dramatic overhaul. It requires small, practiced moments of awareness and return.
What to Expect on November 19th
Beyond the Overwhelm: Nervous System Tools for Holiday Stress brings together five practitioners from 1440 Health Collective for an evening of honest conversation, practical tools, and a little experiential practice.
- Jessica Luke – Spiritual Counseling and Depth Hypnosis – will open and moderate the evening helping to bridge together the group and the shared insights.
- Rachel Brumberger – Acupuncture – will reframe how stress shows up differently for different nervous systems: the over-doers, the highly sensitive, the ones who blast music and the ones who need complete quiet. All of it is valid. All of it makes sense.
- Heidi Palian – Holistic Health – on the mineral and nutritional foundations of stress resilience, including why magnesium may be the most underappreciated tool in your cabinet
From there, our practitioners will each offer something grounded and usable:
- Graciela on vagus nerve stimulation, abdominal therapy, and EFT tapping
- Jeanette McHale on breathwork and a full-body check-in you can use anywhere
We’ll close with Q&A and a collection of take-home resources from our practitioners — practical tools you can actually use through the holiday season and beyond.
Come as You Are
This event is for you if the holidays feel heavy. If you’re already tired and it’s only October. If you’ve been running on empty for longer than you’d like to admit and you’re ready for something — even something small — to shift.
You don’t need to be in crisis to deserve support. You just need to be human.
